U.S. Commerce Department to Publish GDP Data on Blockchain in Transparency Push
The U.S. Commerce Department will begin publishing official GDP and economic statistics on blockchain networks, Secretary Howard Lutnick announced during a WHITE House cabinet meeting. This marks one of the first major adoptions of distributed ledger technology by a federal agency for core government data dissemination.
Blockchain implementation aims to enhance transparency, security, and accessibility of critical economic indicators. "We're going to make that available to the entire government so all of you can do it," Lutnick stated, suggesting potential interagency applications. The initiative launches with GDP figures but may expand to other datasets.
The move aligns with global trends of blockchain adoption in public administration, potentially setting a precedent for other federal entities. Unlike traditional databases, blockchain's Immutable ledger could provide verifiable audit trails for sensitive economic data while improving real-time access for authorized parties.
